행복과 깨달음의 메시지들! 

이 책은 모두 4부로 구성되어 있다. 고해(苦海)인 사바세계의 삶을 그냥 그대로 <바라보기>에서부터 시작해, 그 고해의 삶을 <내려놓기>, 그 고해의 삶에서 <벗어나기>, 그리고 그 고해의 삶과 더불어 <행복하기> 등 기 · 승 · 전 · 결의 형태로 구성되어 있다.
법현 스님은 이 네 가지 삶의 형태를 통해 이웃들이 미망과 고통의 삶에서 벗어나 해탈과 자유의 삶으로 나아갈 수 있도록 시(詩) 형식을 빌려 누구나 알기 쉽고 받아들이기 쉽게 문학적 장치를 이용해 그동안 자신이 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)로 이웃들과 소통했던 글과 사진을 한데 모아 발행한 것이다. 
그 때문일까? 이 책에서 가장 먼저 떠오르는 건 법현 스님의 가슴에 어머니처럼 항상 살아 숨 쉬는 모성(母性)과 자비로서의 언어와 메지지이다. 

날씨가 춥다, 아가. 
밥 잘 묵고 있제? 
어디 아픈 디는 없고? 
어르신들 말씀을 잘 들어라 와. 
아, 아랫사람들이 있는가 모르겠다만 
거그도 따스하게 해줘라. 
모다 좋은 것이 좋은 것이여. 

살다보면 이런 저런 일들이 있을 것이다. 
이런 때도 저런 때도 그저 따땃이 해라. 
더구나 추운 때는 따슨 것이 제일이여. 
찬바람 맞고 다니다가도 
바람벽에 볕 들먼 좋지 않드냐? 

산몰랑이 넘어선 바람도 
나무들 감아돌고 
고랑도 훑어내리다 보면 숨이 죽는 거인께 
그저 낮은 데로 댕기거라 
고개도 너무 빳빳이 말고? 

아무리 추워도 
집에 들어가 이불 덮고 누우면 뽀땃하지 않더냐? 
찬바람이 어린 싹들 고샅을 헤치며 드나들어도 
솜같은 이불눈이 나리면 다숩단다. 
보리네 이불이 바로 눈이란다. 
눈[眼] 잘 덮어서 보리[菩提]싹 잘 자라게 하거라. 
알았제? 
따뜻한 것이 다시 보믄 시원한 것이란다.

이처럼 법현 스님은 실제로 모시고 사는 팔순 노모의 언어(전라남도 언어)를 빌려 정감 넘치면서도 따뜻하게 이웃들에게 ‘눈[眼] 잘 덮어서 보리[菩提]싹 잘 자라게 하거라’라며 깨달음과 삶의 행복론을 해학적으로 동시에 전하고 있다. 그 누구도 생각하지 못한 겨울철 작물인 ‘보리’를 깨달음의 ‘보리[菩提]’로 승화시키며 삶의 애한과 고통을 순식간에 따뜻한 행복과 깨달음의 경지로 치환시키고 있는 것이다.

저자소개

저자 : 법현

저자 법현은 서울시 은평구 갈현동 역촌중앙시장의 ‘저잣거리 스님’으로 더 유명한 법현 스님은, 카카오톡, 카카오스토리, 밴드, 페이스북 등 SNS 공간도 중요한 도량이요 법당이라는 생각으로 카친, 스친, 밴친, 페친들과 활발하게 소통하고 있다. 시민사회와 종교, 불교의 울타리를 벗어난 어울림 또한 중요한 수행이요, 전법이라는 생각을 가지고 각계각층의 사람들을 다양하게 만나며 호흡하고 있다. 한국불교태고종 부원장과 불교종단협의회 상임이사, 종교인평화회의 종교간 대화위원장을 역임하고, 성공회대에서 스님과 함께하는 채플 강의를 했으며, 가톨릭동북아평화연구소 초빙연구원으로 활동하고 있다. 선(禪)과 농사(農事)와 봉사와 섬김과 헌신이 진정한 불교의 사회적 실천운동이라는 생각에 이웃종교들과도 교류를 자주 가지며, 때로는 승려가 아니라 농사꾼이 되기도 하고, 촛불혁명 때는 촛불이 되어 함께 나섰다. 시장 중에서도 가장 열악한 저잣거리 시장인 역촌중앙시장 2층에 <열린선원>이라는 포교원을 열고, 시장 사람들의 친근한 벗이 되기도 하고 농사를 짓는 등 선농(禪農) 일체의 길을 가고 있다. 이번에 엮은 책은 그동안 카친, 스친, 밴친, 페친들과 소통한 글을 한데 모은 것이다.

먼저 1부 <바라보기> 편에서는 다음과 같이 아주 상식적이고 평범한 노래가 법현 스님의 해학과 혜안을 거쳐 부지불식간에 우리들을 깨달음과 행복의 세계로 안내하고 있다. 

열차가 
멈출 때 앞으로 쏠리던 몸이 
떠날 땐 뒤로 젖혀지거나 

출렁거리는 배 위에서

또 제2부 <내려놓기>에서는 다음과 같은 익살적인 이야기 시로 어리석음에서 깨어나지 못하는 중생들에게 자유와 평화가 무엇인지를 알기 쉽게 전해주고 있다. 

산길을 걷다가 
발을 헛디딘 장님이 
굴러굴러 내려오다 
어찌어찌 손에 잡히는 것이 있어 
붙잡고 매달렸다. 

두 손을 
철봉 잡듯이 꼭 잡고 매달려 
살려달라고 주위를 향해 소리쳤다. 

한참을 그렇게 
살려달라 소리치며 매달려 있으니 
기운은 빠지고 곧 나무에서 
손을 놓칠 것 같아서 
무서웠다. 
천길 낭떠러지일 것이기에. 

다행스럽게 
사람 지나가는 소리가 들리길래 
더 크게 소리치며 
살려달라고 애원했다. 

그런데 
그 사람은 고요한 소리로 말했다. 
“손을 놓으시오.” 

장님은 
그러면 죽을 텐데 왜 그리 모지냐면서 
울음으로 애원했으나 
행인은 손 놓으라는 소리만 하고 
가버렸고 힘은 다 빠져버렸다. 

이제는 죽었구나 하며 
나무를 잡은 두 손에 힘이 빠지며 
놓쳤는데 떨어져보니 
금세 발이 땅에 닿았다. 

눈에 보이지 않아 
무서워서 오그린 탓에 
다리가 땅에 닿지 않았던 것이다. 

그 누구만이 아니라 
누구라도 마찬가지다. 
손을 놓는 것이 살 길일 수 있다. 

놓으라고 
손을 놓으라고 
그럼 살 수 있다고 
내게 
말해주는 이 있는가? 

나도 
말해주고 있는가?

제3부 <벗어나기>에서는 다음과 같은 역설의 시로 자유롭고 행복한 삶을 살려면 어떻게 해야 하는지 방향타를 알려주고 있다. 

살면서 한 번쯤은 
뜨겁게 사랑해봐야 안다. 

살면서 한 번쯤은 
차갑게 미워해봐야 안다. 

살면서 한 번쯤은 
죽도록 공부(수행)해봐야 안다.

제4부 <행복하기>에서는 이러한 삶의 단계(수행 과정)를 거쳐 행복의 진정한 얼굴과 마음이 무엇인지를 다시금 재치 있는 익살과 해학의 언어로 중생들의 그 몽매한 마음을 깨우쳐주고 있다. 

어느 날 
한 부부가 크게 다퉜다. 
남편이 참다못해 소리쳤다. 

“당신 것 모두 가지고 나가!” 

그 말을 듣고 아내는 
큰 가방을 쫙 열어 놓고는 
“다 필요 없어요! 
이 가방에 하나만 넣고 갈래요! 
당신! 
어서 가방 속에 들어가세요!” 

남편은 그 말을 듣고 어이가 없었지만 
한편으로는 
자기만 의지하고 사는 아내에게 
너무했다 싶어서 
곧 
사과했다고 한다.
